Antenna or Chip?
Damaged coax cables
Typically happens during amateur teardowns where the fine cables get pinched or torn off. Signal is weak but works up close. Replacing the antennas fixes the issue.
Dead Network IC
The module is completely dead (options grayed out). Solder joints under the BGA package cracked, or the silicon failed. Reflow or chip replacement is required.

Can I play with ethernet in the meantime?
Yes, LAN cables bypass the Wifi module. However, controllers will still need to be wired via USB to avoid disconnection.
